In light of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Pastoral Care Week (Oct 22-28), MCC Manitoba’s Abuse Response and Prevention program is hosting a full day-training, in partnership with Genesis House, on Pastoral Care and Domestic Violence.
This training is geared for faith leaders, pastors, counsellors and those in spiritual care roles. The day will include sessions on:
· understanding myths, forms, and dynamics of intimate partner violence
· responding to those who are harmed by or use violence in their relationships
· offering spiritual and theological support in ways that do no further harm
The training is Wednesday, October 25 at the Best Western Plus (1705 Diamond Drive) in Winkler, MB. Please plan to arrive by 8:30 am, as the workshop will begin at 9 am. The cost is $50, which includes lunch. To register, please email resource@genesis-house.ca or call (204) 362-0082.

Jaymie Friesen-Abuse Response & Prevention, MCC Manitoba
As Abuse Response & Prevention Program Coordinator, Jaymie raises awareness and offers resources relating to healthy relationships and abuse, while supporting those impacted by abuse. Jaymie entered this role with experience as a healthy relationships educator, sexual assault crisis counsellor, and mental health worker. She holds a BA in Social Sciences, a Certificate in Applied Counselling and is currently completing her Masters in Psychotherapy and Spirituality.
Val Hiebert-Abuse Response & Prevention, MCC Manitoba
As Abuse Response and Prevention Consultant, Val, together with Jaymie Friesen, raises awareness, teaching workshops and seminars relating to healthy relationships within churches and families. In addition to this she conducts various types of domestic abuse related research. She is also currently a Professor of Sociology at the University of Manitoba. She has taught about gender, children & violence, language & culture, cultural anthropology, and marriage & family for the past 20 years. Val enjoys bringing her academic learnings into community contexts, for awareness, advocacy and conversation.
Cameron McKenzie
Cameron joined Fort Garry Evangelical Mennonite Church as lead pastor in 2021 after 25 years teaching Old Testament at Providence University College and Theological Seminary. In addition to teaching, Cameron filled roles as dean and provost at Providence. Cameron currently serves as chair of the Board of Leadership and Outreach for the Evangelical Mennonite Conference. When they are not enjoying being grandparents to their two-year-old granddaughter, Cameron and his wife Irma enjoy walking, cycling, good coffee and British sitcoms.
