You are invited to join us on Nov. 13th at Canadian Mennonite University for "Domestic Violence: Deep Cultural Norms that Affect the Church." This essential educational one-day event is specially designed for pastors, church and community organization leaders who want to better understand and address the deep-seated cultural norms that contribute to domestic violence within the church and its families.
Registration is $30. Lunch and coffee breaks are included. RSVP required.
Domestic Violence: Deep Cultural Norms that Affect the Church
Explore the effects of pornography culture and purity culture, and how the silence surrounding these issues can lead to shame, harm and hinder healthy sexual development. This session will also provide a framework for fostering healthy sexuality within the church context, highlighting how these topics intersect with domestic violence.
Examine the cultural power of language in shaping our understanding of God, with a focus on the often-overlooked maternal metaphors in the Biblical text. This session will discuss how the absence of these metaphors in the language of the Church contributes to attitudes and perspectives that can lead to domestic violence

Learn how restorative justice principles can guide pastors and church leaders in responding to domestic violence and clergy sexual exploitation. This session will provide practical insights into using this principles as a compass for action with the Church.
Engage in small and large group discussions to process the day’s presentations. This session will create space for participants to share insights, reflect collectively and deepen their understanding of the topics covered
Facilitator: Val Hiebert
Val Hiebert is the Abuse Response and Prevention Co-Coordinator for MCC Manitoba. As co-coordinator, she raises awareness, teaching workshops and seminars relating to healthy relationships within churches and families.
Val entered her role in MCC Manitoba with an academic background. She taught gender, children and violence, language and culture, cultural anthropology, and marriage and family at Providence University College for 20 years. Today, she teaches sessional courses at the University of Manitoba and Canadian Mennonite University. Val holds a PhD in Sociology and Anthropology from Western Sydney University and enjoys bringing her academic learnings into community contexts — for awareness, advocacy and conversation.
