Finding freedom in Canada

Our evening together will feature the exhibit Hearts of Freedom - Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees and a screening of the documentary Passage to Freedom, which captures the perilous journeys of these refugees through oral histories, archival footage, and interviews with former refugees and Canadian immigration officials. From 1975 to 1985, Canada resettled over 100,000 Southeast Asian refugees, earning international recognition with the UNHCR Nansen Medal in 1986. The exhibit and film explore their integration into Canadian society and the enduring contributions of this first generation and their descendants.

Following the screening, engage in a panel discussion with the exhibitor curator, researchers and some of the documentary's interviewees.
